SUCCESS!

They finally unlocked the blog! And in the months leading up to this realization, NightHawk Faraday has gained X, XFCE, a product id verification thing and other cool stuff. Then that line of builds has been scrapped and a new one based on Slackware 12.1 is being developed.

Build 7548: Oh now there is no sound, for we all live underground.

Well, I'll jump in this whole dev blog thing mid-way through development of NightHawk Faraday Server Free prerelease.

Lets take a look at what NightHawk Faraday is so far:
A Slackware 12 based Linux-distribution customized for hella easy use by end-users and a design that is as elegant as previous non Linux-based Faraday systems.

I have added:
Splashy, for a custom boot splash to cover the cryptic boot messages, which may scare some new users
AND
FreeBASIC Compiler, for easy creation of apps for NH that can be used on previous Faraday systems [not that anyone uses them, but JUST IN CASE] and for easy portability to Windows and DOS.

I also added the directory structure for Faraday Consolas, a text [or framebuffer] based environment designed for people who choose not to use X Windows, but still want some sort of useful desktop metaphor; or for those whose computers cannot run X Windows for some reason.

I also created some Boot images for the different releases that we will be releasing. These releases are:

  • Free: a time-limited install or live CD for use in testing the OS
  • Home: a simple install for use in a home environment with tools for web browsing, email, viewing photos, watching DVD movies, and listening to music [of all formats. Fuck the whole "avoiding lawsuits by only including 'free' software thing. I want people to be able to actually USE Linux after installing it, instead of fighting with it]
  • Home Entertainment: Same as Home, but with TV and FM tuner support, Video editing and sharing, and a nifty Media Center interface [for both XWin and Consolas ^_^]
  • Education: Contains many edutainment tools for use in a school-type settings.
  • Business: Contains a full-featured office suite [OpenOffice.org for X, Compuease Group's and DeskWare for Consolas [if i ever feel like coding it]
  • Server: Two versions of this: One with XWin, and one without. both contain apache2 and myriad security features, ftpd, ircd, and some other servers.
  • AND EPIC: Contains the best features of all the other editions, and some EPIC EXTRAS! No, I'm not gonna pull a Microsoft and not ever release any, there will be some kickass stuff available only with Epic, you'll all see ^_^
